safe hands: SIMPLIFIED VERSION

In 2023, Theatre of the Beat collaborated with Community Living Trent Highlands and Canopy Support Services with the support of the Human Services and Justice Coordinating Committee (HSJCC) to adapt our “Safe Hands: Consent and Healthy Boundaries” workshop for folks with developmental disabilities.

In this simplified version, participants learn about consent and healthy boundaries using a variety of visuals, props, and interactive theatre exercises to explore these concepts.

The workshop was such a success that we are no offering this new adaptation for elementary school students.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Communication: Saying “No” and hearing and accepting “No”

  • Different ways to say “No” – Verbal & Non-verbal

  • Defining Consent

  • Defining Public vs. Private (places, body parts, language)

  • Touch – appropriate vs. not appropriate

  • Relationships – power & boundaries using Circles Program

TOTB WORKSHOP FEEDBACK AND REVIEWS

"Theatre of the Beat’s Safe Hands workshop was informative, interactive and engaging. Lena and Cedric did a wonderful job modifying this workshop to fit the needs of the people we support to make it more inclusive. Theatre of the Beat took a complex topic and simplified it through visuals, movement and role play. Our clients are now able to take the skills they learned from this workshop and apply them to everyday life. We look forward to working with Theatre of the Beat in the future and exploring the other workshops they have to offer.”

- Brandy Wotten, Adult Protective Service Worker at Canopy Support Services

"I really enjoyed the Safe Hands workshop. It was very much in line with the Healthy Relationship & Sexuality course that I teach. The interactive approach was an excellent way to engage the group so they could better understand the context of the workshop."
